    Advocating for a sustainable future for Cantonese at CCSF

  • About the Campaign

    At the City College of San Francisco (CCSF), Cantonese has been a vital resource for heritage speakers and new learners alike. However, cuts to class offerings threaten the future of Cantonese language education. Save Cantonese is working to create a strong and sustainable Cantonese program that meets the needs of students today and for generations to come.

     

    After student-led protests in response to these cuts, two Cantonese courses were offered in Fall 2021, but only one was available in Spring 2022. While this was a small victory, we are advocating for long-term changes that will solidify Cantonese's place at CCSF. This includes securing administrative support and ensuring Cantonese is part of a certificate program eligible for funding.

    Our Goals

    To establish a thriving Cantonese program at CCSF, we are advocating for the following:

    1. Inclusion of Cantonese classes in a 16-unit, funding-eligible certificate program.
    2. UC-transferable Cantonese classes, ensuring students can continue their education seamlessly.
    3. Four or more Cantonese course offerings per semester, ranging from beginner to advanced levels.
    4. One or more full-time equivalent Cantonese instructors, who are compensated fairly with salary, benefits, and job protections.

    Background

    CCSF has long been a cornerstone of accessible education in San Francisco, serving a diverse student body. However, the instability of Cantonese course offerings jeopardizes its future as a resource for cultural preservation and linguistic education.

     

    Our vision is to expand opportunities for students to learn Cantonese by integrating these courses into a certificate program, which will provide additional funding and institutional support. These changes are vital to ensure that future generations of students can connect with their heritage or explore this rich language.
